Recently, I was reminded of the importance of paying closer attention to howwe make decisions—especially when life feels loud and demanding. Too often, our choices are shaped by who we might inconvenience or disappoint, rather than what truly brings us joy. And in doing that, we silence our joy and slowly lose pieces of ourselves.
I recently joined a powerful conversation in the Myleik & Momma’s community, where therapist Thea Monyeé led a session on Wholeness, Creativity & Telling the Truth. She shared a helpful tool for realigning with your joy.
During the session, we explored the question—what is joy, really? And how do we get our bodies and hearts back in sync with it? Because, as Thea explained, joy isn’t just an emotion; it’s a practice of alignment. It’s the conscious act of saying “yes” to what expands you and “no” to what drains you.
Today’s reflection comes from that space. Below are my notes on a joy meditation practice Thea shared—a way to bring your body back online with your joy.
The Joy Meditation Practice
Use this short, embodied meditation to reconnect your body and spirit to joy:
-
Envision the word “yes” in your mind while nodding your head “no.”
-
Envision “no” while nodding “yes.”
-
Envision “yes” while nodding “yes.”
-
Envision “no” while nodding “no.”
During each prompt, notice what you feel. What emotions or sensations surface? This exercise helps you discern when your body’s instincts and your mind’s decisions are out of alignment.
Practicing this daily can help realign you to what brings authentic joy—helping you recognize the difference between conditioned responses and genuine desire. From that awareness, have honest conversations and honor what’s true for you.
Closing Reflection
As you move through your days, consider adding this meditation to your daily rhythm, just like your morning prayer, journaling, or quiet time. It’s a way to check in with yourself, realign your body and spirit, and return to what’s true. I pray this blesses you too.
With you on this journey,
Allene
